Understand and Empower: Take Control of Your Life

Often when I’m working with teams, managers, or individuals, our initial session/s can be quite easily spent discussing things that are perceived to be “the problem”. The thing that is “taking success away”.

These things can be internal or external, but regardless of their nature, so much time and energy can be spent focused on the “negative”.

This is characteristic of the internalised societal norms that dictate so much of the way we move through life as humans.

It’s not bad to know what we might perceive as “negative”, but it’s better to go to the extent of understanding it.

In the midst of the chaos and clamour of modern life, many of us find ourselves wrestling with a deep sense of disconnection, a feeling that we are somehow out of sync with our true purpose. Beneath the layers of societal expectations and inherited narratives lies a yearning to rediscover who we truly are, to unearth the essence of our being that may have been buried under years of conditioning.

This journey of self-discovery doesn’t end at personal fulfilment; it should continue on, and cause us to tap into the unique contribution each of us has to offer the world.

My hope through this article, is that you’ll be able to understand more about empowerment and success, and that you’ll find ways to empower yourself and achieve the goals that you set.

Burnout and Other Symptoms: When Empowerment is Not Present

When we lack our own empowerment, we can experience an array of different things. These might include:

  • Feeling Disconnected: We often feel disconnected from our authentic selves, as if we are living someone else’s life rather than our own. This can make it hard to manage stress.
  • Struggling to Find Purpose: Many of us grapple with a sense of aimlessness, unsure of what we are truly meant to do in this world. This can make it hard if we decide to take control of our lives.
  • Suppressing Our True Essence: Due to societal pressures and past experiences, we may have suppressed aspects of ourselves that we deem unacceptable or unworthy. This can further remove us from our own personal empowerment.
  • Seeking Validation External: We may have sought validation and acceptance from external sources, leading to a cycle of seeking approval rather than embracing our innate worth. This can make it challenging to build confidence.

In a world that often values conformity over individuality, it can be challenging to take charge and embrace our authentic essence.

From a young age, we are inundated with societal norms and expectations, shaping our beliefs about who we should be and what we should strive for. Additionally, we inherit narratives from previous generations, carrying the weight of their struggles, limitations, and triumphs.

Set Your Goals: Live a Self-Empowered Life and Achieve Personal, Realistic Goals that Matter to You

Setting goals is one of the vital actionable steps toward achieving personal success. When you make a conscious decision to take stock and define your goals, you give yourself a clear direction and purpose. You expect more, which enables more to be experienced.

This allows you to prioritise your focus and intentionally devote time and energy to the things that truly matter to you.

As you walk down this path of self-empowerment, setting clear goals and aspirations will help you develop a sort of map for moving forward. It’s also important to remember that your map doesn’t have to be set in stone – in fact as Martin Luther King said,

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

As time moves forward, you may discover new things that change your mind or approach, and thus your revealing path might create a plan that looks different.

To set your own goal-oriented path for your empowerment journey, start by taking some time to centre yourself in an environment that feels safe and supportive. When you feel comfortable to continue, engage in some introspection, and ask yourself if there are any big goals that you’d want to achieve in different aspects of your journey, and in different areas of your life.

Once you’ve got some goals in mind, start breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps. Things like a vision board or a goal-setting journal with a daily reminder can be helpful in this process.

This will help you stay motivated and track your progress as you’re taking action. It’s important to remember that setbacks and challenges are inevitable, and are wholly part of the journey! They are not negative – they indicate that you are moving through new experiences that can hold greater insight for the next level of clarity required for your emerging path.

Remember, to empower ourselves is to unlock our authentic essence. To do this, we must embark on a journey that is unique and never been travelled before! It isn’t about “strengths and weaknesses” but rather about consistent self-inquiry and self-acceptance.

Once we’ve broken our bigger goals into more achievable goals, we can begin taking steps every day towards the goal of self-empowered success. If you feel overwhelmed, then start with smaller steps and gradually work your way to bigger ones as you overcome challenges and boost your self-confidence.

Here are four different concepts that can help you take ground when it comes to developing this part of yourself.

1. Positive Self-Talk and its Impact on Self-Empowerment

The way we talk to ourselves internally can greatly influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Think about how we might talk to someone we care for deeply. When we are supportive and unconditionally loving to them or when we are criticising or judging them. Often it is a lot easier to see the impact that ‘talk’ can have when we see it in others. While, the way we talk to ourselves has a similarly impactful influence.

According to Sigmund Freud’s theory of the Id, the Ego and the Superego, we have internalised voices that represent different parts of our experience. One voice represents our moral and societal conditioning. It is judgemental and can often be quite negative. Another voice is that of our subconscious mind, and it is more aligned with our authentic nature. It can often be more playful and honest, and less negative.

By practising positive self-talk, we can be more intentional and shift the balance in favour of the voice that best serves and empowers ourselves. This also enables us to show up as our better selves for and with those around us.

Instead of allowing negative thoughts and self-doubt to hold us back, we can choose to be our own biggest cheerleader. We can replace self-criticism with self-encouragement, self-doubt with self-belief, and fear with confidence.

When we speak to ourselves with kindness, compassion, and encouragement, we nurture a positive mindset and boost our self-confidence. This, in turn, enables us to take bold actions, overcome obstacles, and achieve our goals. Remember, you have the power to shape your own reality, and it starts with the way you talk to yourself. So, be intentional and practice voting for yourself with confidence and watch how this act can foster a sense of freedom.

2. Self-Inquiry can Change Your Life

Self-inquiry is a powerful tool that can bring about transformative changes in your life. By engaging in deep introspection and exploration, you can uncover the hidden beliefs, fears, and patterns that may be holding you back from achieving your goals. It requires a willing embrace of your own vulnerability, as you dive into the unknown depths of your emotions and thoughts.

Through self-inquiry, you gain a greater understanding of yourself and the root causes of your self-limiting beliefs. This self-awareness empowers you to challenge and overcome those beliefs, replacing them with empowering and positive thoughts.

Self-inquiry also allows you to identify your strengths, passions, and values. It helps you align your actions with your true desires, enabling you to make measurable choices that are in alignment with your authentic self. By embracing self-inquiry and being open to self-reflection, you can create a life that is more aligned with your dreams and aspirations. It may not be easy to take self-inquiry head on, but taking actionable steps are key to changing your life for the better.

Take the time to inquire deeply within yourself, exploring where you have felt shut down or compelled to change in order to survive. These moments of pain and suffering often hold the key to unlocking our authentic essence.

Allow yourself to embrace vulnerability and confront the parts of yourself that you have locked away out of fear or shame. These aspects of your being are not flaws to be hidden but treasures waiting to be rediscovered.

3. Move Your Body: Practice Self-Care and Self-Compassion

Moving your body not only improves your physical health but also has a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being. By prioritising self-care and self-compassion, you can develop a deeper connection with yourself and enhance your overall capacity for stress management.

Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which are known as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins help to reduce stress and anxiety, lift your mood, and increase your overall sense of well-being. Whether it’s going for a run, taking a yoga class, or simply going for a walk, finding a form of activity that you enjoy can have a transformative effect and help you feel empowered.

In addition to physical activity, practising self-care and self-compassion involves taking time for yourself and engaging in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. This can include activities such as meditation, journaling, spending time in nature, or indulging in hobbies or interests that bring you joy.

Often we can feel there’s no time to fit these activities into our busy daily schedules… While, we can incorporate these self-care moments by shifting our intention in our regular routine activities. For example, my daily gratitude practice is something I end my shower routine with. When I have finished washing, I turn the water to cold and I say out loud an affirmation that Louise Hay shares, “I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious and happy.’ And then I say who I am grateful for in my life and I wish them perfect health and happiness. This doesn’t take any ‘extra’ time and lifts my spirits to focus on what really matters to me.

By prioritising self-care, you are sending a powerful message to yourself that you are worthy of love, care, and attention.

Offer yourself unconditional love and acceptance, holding space for all parts of yourself, even the ones you may have deemed unworthy. Recognise that you are inherently worthy of love and belonging.

By incorporating movement and self-care into your daily routine, you are actively investing in your own well-being. These practices promote self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-love, allowing you to show up fully in all areas of your life. By taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally, you are creating the foundation for personal growth and achieving your goals.

4. Reconnect with Your Calling and Surround Yourself with Positive People

The people we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on our mindset, beliefs, and actions. When you surround yourself with positive people, you create an environment that nurtures your growth and supports your goals.

If we don’t already have people like this in our lives,  it can be a challenge to find them.

Finding “our tribe” can be done in many different ways. You can attend networking/ similar interest events, join professional groups, or engage in communities centered around your interests and aspirations. These spaces allow you to connect with like-minded individuals who may share similar directions or paths in life. It’s also helpful to seek out mentors or role models who have achieved what you aspire to accomplish. Their guidance can provide invaluable insights and motivation on your journey.

As you become more self-empowered, you will notice a natural alignment and connection with your true calling. Prioritising this allows you to tap into your authentic self and uncover your passions and purpose. You will gain clarity on your values, interests, and strengths, which will guide you towards finding your calling and pursuing it with conviction.

Reconnecting with your calling means understanding that your work or life purpose goes beyond making a living. It is about aligning your actions with your values and making a meaningful contribution to the world. Surrounding yourself with positive people who are on a similar path can provide the support and encouragement needed to stay focused on your calling, and confident in your ability.

Trust in the unique contribution that only you can offer to the world, and give yourself permission to show up authentically in every aspect of your life.

Remember, you have the power to choose who you spend your time with. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift, inspire, and challenge you to become your best self. Doing so will help you achieve your goals.

Safeguard the Future

Prevention is better than cure!

Remaining empowered requires ongoing effort and intentionality. It’s important that you maintain the practices discussed above, in order to avoid the trap of falling back into a life that lacks empowerment.

Below are three additional things you can do to help ensure that you’re protecting your future self from falling back into the same hole that you worked hard to climb out of.

Create an Action Plan and Set Reasonable Goals

An action plan in this context will help you navigate through life’s challenges while maintaining an empowered mindset. It will provide some structure and guidance for staying on track with your aspirations and achievements.

Without an action plan, you may find yourself reacting to stressful situations instead of responding in a way that aligns with your empowered self. This can lead to disempowering experiences, and may make it harder to maintain the positive changes you’ve made.

While it’s important to dream big and aim for the stars, setting unrealistic goals can be overwhelming and lead to feelings of failure. Breaking your big dreams into actionable steps allows you to stay focused and motivated without becoming overwhelmed.

When setting goals within your action plan, it’s crucial to be realistic and don’t be disheartened if you find yourself taking up actions that you didn’t even know of when you wrote the action plan! This is the key to continuously learning more about yourself and your growth. The unfolding path will reveal insights, opportunities and actions that you were unaware of before. Being able to shift with these in alignment with what you intend is a mastery skill for self-empowerment.

Remember, what we intend and reasonable goals are different for everyone. It’s essential to avoid comparing yourself to others and instead act in accordance with your own authenticity.

Develop a Positive Attitude and Learn New Skills

Developing and maintaining a positive attitude is crucial to fostering a self-empowered way of life over the long term. Positivity breeds confidence and resilience, which are fundamental to empowerment. Conversely, harbouring a negative mindset can be insidious, and can gradually erode your own sense of agency and freedom. This negativity acts like a self-sabotaging agent that gnaws away at your autonomy, potentially nudging you ever so slightly back into a state of disempowerment.

Learning new skills also plays a pivotal role here. It can reinforce the growth mindset, which can be key to sustaining the freedom you’ve found.

As an example in the realm of business success; acquiring financial literacy can empower an individual to manage finances more effectively, providing a means of security and autonomy even in the face of economic difficulties. This skill helps to safeguard one’s empowered lifestyle by offering control over an important aspect of life, regardless of external challenges.

Each new skill acts as a building block, solidifying your empowered structure against the future, and the unknown.

Seek Feedback From a Trusted Professional

As you walk this journey, it can be helpful from time to time to remind yourself that the progress you make will rarely be linear and straight-forward.

This is okay, and this is natural.

Like many wonderful things in our human experience, true progression is rarely smooth sailing. Sometimes progress can look (and feel) more like a rollercoaster ride, than a staircase.

What matters is how we progress forward through the challenges and successes. Internal and external feedback is important here.

Listen to what your body and spirit are telling you. Speak to trusted individuals, and if possible, trusted professionals who have walked this path with others. It may be an empowerment coach or business coach, a therapist or a counsellor. I have had the blessing of engaging with so many of these trusted professionals along my journey, and continue to engage in commitment to my ongoing expansion, learning and growth.

These professionals can provide an external perspective that may uncover blind spots and offer new insights into your personal and professional development. Their expertise can support people not only in securing a sense of empowerment for the future, but can also ensure that they receive the guidance they need in their current journey. This guidance can help navigate the intricacies of the empowerment path, and can allow you to develop more clearly defined strategies and confidence-building techniques.

A proactive approach to seeking feedback ensures that you’re better equipped to face challenges, seize opportunities, and refine skills continuously. A trusted professional can support you as an experienced accountability partner, a sounding board, and a strategist, and this can help create a robust environment that fosters the growth of self-empowerment both now and in the future.

The Path to Achievable Success

Self-empowerment helps you uncover and appreciate your inner authenticity and your inherent strength, and this can translate into the enhanced ability to set ambitious goals, persevere through obstacles, and ultimately achieve those same goals. It also fuels determination, encourages confident inner-alignment, and cultivates a learning attitude; all of which are critical components of a successful personal and professional life journey.

In unlocking our authentic essence, we not only fulfill our own potential but also contribute to the greater tapestry of humanity. Each of us carries within us a spark of divinity, a unique expression of the miraculous gift of existence. By embracing who we truly are, we honour the legacy of those who have come before us and pave the way for future generations to do the same.

If you’d like to explore this aspect of your experience with an experienced professional, then don’t hesitate to reach out for a no-obligation call, where we can explore your path together and see if there’s a mutual fit that can elevate you towards achieving your goals while becoming the best version of your empowered self!

May you have a magical workday, every day!
